What are Varicose Veins?

Sometimes the veins grow, widen, and overfill with blood to become varicose veins, also known as varicoses or varicosities. Varicose veins often have a bluish-purple or red colour and an elevated, bloated appearance. They are sometimes painful. The condition is extremely prevalent, particularly among women. Varicose veins affect about 25% of adults. They typically form on the lower legs as standing and walking put more strain on the veins on the lower body.

Identifying the Signs of Varicose Vein

Twisted, bulging veins bluish-purple in colour

Heavy or fatigued legs

Swollen & throbbing feet

Pain behind the knees and muscle cramp in the legs

Itching in the surrounding skin

Understand the Causes of Varicose Vein

When the valves of your veins weaken, varicose veins develop. The weaker valves of your vein allow the blood to flow downwards causing dilatation of veins. The valves in your vein that keep blood flowing in one direction can't function properly. Slow-moving blood accumulates or pools in your vein, causing it to enlarge, bulge, and twist.

There are several factors that might cause vein walls and valves to degenerate, including:

standing

Extended periods of standing puts pressure on the veins in your legs

obesity

Obesity also increases the pressure on the veins in the legs

aging

Aging can cause valves to weaken and lead to blood collecting & bulging veins

pregnancy

Hormone changes during pregnancy also cause valves to relax

smoking

Smoking causes vein linings to weaken and narrow leading to irregular blood flow

Types of Varicose Veins

The saphenous veins in the legs which enlarge dramatically above their normal size and protrude from the skin are affected by saphenous varicose veins. The veins have an enormous, rope-like appearance. The protruding nature of these varicose veins makes them equally as obvious as those that are colourless.

Spider veins can be seen anywhere on the body. They are smaller in size and can be blue in colour. In addition to being thinner and smaller than other varicose veins, spider veins generally spread in a web shape as opposed to a mesh shape.

Reticular varicose veins cover a larger region of the skin and stretch out like a mesh. Normally, the veins are thicker and have green, or purple colouring. Reticular veins can be unappealing even if they don't necessarily protrude.

Cost of Varicose Vein Surgery in Bangalore

Your doctor will choose a specific varicose vein therapy based on:

  • Age, general health, and medical background
  • Magnitude of the problem
  • Your symptoms and signs
  • Your ability to tolerate particular treatments, operations, or medications
  • Expectations on how the illness will progress

Varicose veins cannot be cured, but the following treatments can lessen their symptoms and appearance:

Vein Surgery: The goal of this surgery which is also known as ligation and stripping is to stop blood from pooling by tying off the afflicted vein. The surgeon might cut out (strip) the vein to prevent varicose veins from developing again.

Laser Therapy: A catheter (a long, thin tube) and laser are used by medical professionals in the minimally invasive surgery called endovenous thermal ablation to seal off a damaged vein.

Sclerotherapy (Injection Therapy): A medical professional injects a solution into your vein during sclerotherapy. The vein walls adhere to one another as a result of the solution. Your vein eventually dissolves and transforms into scar tissue

Elastic Stockings: Your veins will be compressed with compression socks or stockings which will reduce the pain. Your veins cannot expand because of the compression which also promotes blood flow.

Elevation: Raise your legs above your waist multiple times during the day to improve blood flow and lower your vein pressure.

Microphlebectomy: Varicose veins are removed using specialised equipment that are inserted through tiny cuts (incisions). It may be performed alone or with vein stripping.

  • Following the surgery, you will be advised to walk for 30 to 60 minutes.
  • There may be minor bruises on your leg after surgery. In about two weeks, the bruises should fade.
  • After your surgery, you'll need a caregiver to take you home.

Be sure to follow any directions given by your doctor after you get home. You might be advised to:

  • To help with reducing the swelling apply an ice pack to the area for 15 minutes at a time.
  • Every day, check the post - surgery areas. Light pink fluid on the bandage is typical.
  • For 48 hours, avoid getting any water on the incision areas. Until the bandages are taken off you might need to take a sponge bath. If suggested, put on compression stockings for a few days or weeks. Your legs will feel these stockings softly squeeze them. Your legs will not swell as a result of this. Additionally, it can aid in preventing blood clotting or pooling.
  • Do not spend extended periods of time lying or sitting. When you sit, keep your leg lifted.
  • Don't stand still for too long.
  • Walk for 10 to 20 minutes each time, around three times per day. Do this for a week to two.
  • Don't run, jump, or lift large objects for a week or two, but keep moving about.
  • For a week or two avoid taking hot baths.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers only on your doctor's advice and as needed. Some medications may make you bleed more.
  • If you stopped taking blood thinners before the operation, ask your doctor when it is okay to start taking them again.

Consult your doctor immediately if you have:

  • Symptoms of infection in the treated region. Redness, warmth, or fluid seeping from the incision are a few of these symptoms.
  • Edema that worsens or newly forming swelling
  • Any discomfort that prevents you from performing your daily chores

Considering the following points, the price of varicose vein surgery may differ from one person to another.

  • The patient's state of health
  • The hospital or clinic type
  • Fee of medical consultation
  • Post-operative complications
  • Patient's age and the type of surgery
  • Any laboratory testing or assessment tests
  • Admission fee

I was advised by my physician for a circumcision for hygienic reasons as well as certain urinary problems. I found out about Mykare Health from Instagram and at first I was a bit sceptical about approaching them as I have never before availed such consultancy services, especially for a medical purpose. Anyway, with a lot of reservations in mind, I decided to take the help of Mykare Health Team. From day one including scheduling the surgery, processing the insurance related paperworks, doctor's appointments etc to the day I got discharged, as well as the follow-up medical checkups later, I have to say the whole experience was totally overwhelming. Mykare representative Ms. Greashma did a commendable job in walking me through the entire journey and, at times, she even went above and beyond her call of duty to address our concerns in a very professional manner and thankfully the entire process was smooth and hassle-free, thanks to her unwavering commitment to the task at hand. Thank you Mykare Health Team for the amazing experience. Keep this going. Kudos. 👍
