What are Varicose Veins?

At times, veins can enlarge, widen, and fill excessively with blood, resulting in varicose veins, also called varicoses or varicosities. These veins often appear bluish-purple or red and look raised and swollen. They can be uncomfortable and are quite common, especially in women. Around 25% of adults are affected by varicose veins. Typically, they develop on the lower legs due to the increased pressure from standing and walking on the lower body veins.

Identifying the Signs of Varicose Vein

Veins that are twisted and bulging, appearing bluish-purple in colour

Legs feeling heavy or tired

Feet that are swollen and throbbing

Pain at the back of the knees and muscle cramps in the legs

Itching on the skin around the affected area

Understand the Causes of Varicose Vein

Varicose veins form when the valves in your veins become weak. These weakened valves let blood flow downward, which leads to the veins getting larger. The valves that normally keep blood flowing in the right direction don't work well, causing blood to gather and enlarge the vein. This results in the vein swelling, bulging, and twisting.

Vein walls and valves might degenerate due to various reasons, including:

Veins in your legs undergo pressure when you stand for long periods.

Obesity adds extra pressure on leg veins.

As you age, valves can weaken, causing blood to collect and veins to bulge.

Valves can relax due to hormone changes during pregnancy.

Smoking weakens and narrows vein linings, disrupting blood flow.

Types of Varicose Veins

Saphenous varicose veins occur when the veins in the legs, which usually appear normal, become significantly enlarged and stick out from the skin. These veins look like large ropes under the skin and are just as noticeable as colourless varicose veins due to their prominent bulging.

Spider veins are visible anywhere on the body. They are smaller and can appear blue. Unlike other varicose veins, they're thinner, tinier, and tend to spread like a web rather than a mesh.

Reticular varicose veins spread across a bigger area of the skin and resemble a stretched mesh. Typically, these veins are thicker and display colours like green or purple. While they might not bulge out, reticular veins can still be visually undesirable.

How can varicose veins be avoided?
questioning-img

Varicose veins might be unavoidable, but adopting an active and healthy lifestyle can reduce the chances of developing them. Doctors recommend several steps to help prevent and manage varicose veins:

Don't stand for long periods: Take regular breaks to stretch and walk around, especially if your job requires you to stand.

Manage your weight: Losing extra pounds reduces pressure in your blood vessels.

Quit smoking: Smoking damages blood arteries, reduces blood flow, and leads to various health problems.

Stretch your legs: Raise your legs to boost heart blood flow by placing your feet above your waist.

Cost of Varicose Vein Surgery in Chennai

Your doctor will select a suitable treatment for varicose veins considering:

  • Your age, overall health, and medical history
  • Magnitude of the issue
  • The symptoms you're experiencing
  • How well you can handle specific treatments, procedures, or drugs
  • Anticipated disease progression expectations

While varicose veins cannot be completely cured, the following treatments can help reduce their symptoms and improve how they look:

  • Vein Surgery: The aim of this surgery, also called ligation and stripping, is to prevent blood from pooling by tying up the affected vein. The surgeon may remove (strip) the vein to stop varicose veins from coming back.
  • Laser Therapy: The surgeon employs a catheter (a lengthy, slender tube) and a laser in the simple surgery known as endovenous thermal ablation. This procedure is used to close a vein that has been harmed.
  • Sclerotherapy (Injection Therapy): A doctor puts a solution into your vein in sclerotherapy. This makes the vein walls stick together. Over time, the vein disappears and transforms into scar tissue.
  • Elastic Stockings: Compression socks or stockings will be used to compress your veins, thereby reducing pain. The compression prevents your veins from expanding, which in turn helps improve blood flow.
  • Elevation: Lift your legs above your waist several times throughout the day to enhance blood circulation and reduce pressure in your veins.
  • Microphlebectomy: Specialised equipment is used to remove varicose veins. These tools are inserted through small cuts, known as incisions. This procedure can be done on its own or combined with vein stripping.

  • After the surgery, you'll be recommended to walk for 30 to 60 minutes.
  • You might notice small bruises on your leg post-surgery, and they should go away in around two weeks.
  • You'll require someone to take you home following your surgery.

Make sure to follow your doctor's instructions once you're back home. Here are some guidelines you might receive:

  • To help reduce swelling, use an ice pack on the area for 15 minutes at a time.
  • Daily, check the surgical areas; it's normal to see light pink fluid on the bandage.
  • Keep the incision areas dry for the first 48 hours. You might need to take a sponge bath until the bandages are removed.
  • If recommended, wear compression stockings for a few days or weeks. These stockings will gently squeeze your legs, preventing swelling and aiding in avoiding blood clotting.
  • Avoid long periods of sitting or lying down. When sitting, keep your leg elevated.
  • Avoid prolonged standing.
  • Walk for 10 to 20 minutes about three times a day for a week or two.
  • Refrain from running, jumping, or lifting heavy objects for a week or two, but keep yourself moving.
  • Skip hot baths for a week or two.
  • Only take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed and according to your doctor's advice. Some medications might increase bleeding.
  • If you stopped taking blood thinners before the surgery, consult your doctor about when to resume them.

Consult your doctor immediately if you have:

  • Signs of infection in the treated area, such as redness, warmth, or fluid leakage from the incision.
  • Increasing edema or the development of new swelling.
  • Any discomfort that hinders your ability to carry out your daily tasks.

Taking these factors into account, the cost of varicose vein surgery can vary from person to person due to:

  • Their health condition
  • The kind of hospital or clinic
  • Medical consultation charges
  • Any post-operative issues
  • Their age and the specific surgery required
  • Necessary lab tests or assessments
  • Admission expenses

I was advised by my physician for a circumcision for hygienic reasons as well as certain urinary problems. I found out about Mykare Health from Instagram and at first I was a bit sceptical about approaching them as I have never before availed such consultancy services, especially for a medical purpose. Anyway, with a lot of reservations in mind, I decided to take the help of Mykare Health Team. From day one including scheduling the surgery, processing the insurance related paperworks, doctor's appointments etc to the day I got discharged, as well as the follow-up medical checkups later, I have to say the whole experience was totally overwhelming. Mykare representative Ms. Greashma did a commendable job in walking me through the entire journey and, at times, she even went above and beyond her call of duty to address our concerns in a very professional manner and thankfully the entire process was smooth and hassle-free, thanks to her unwavering commitment to the task at hand. Thank you Mykare Health Team for the amazing experience. Keep this going. Kudos. 👍
